(TStarnes) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) had some pretty unusual things to say about supporters of former President Trump as a bunch of “listless vessels” who kiss the president’s rear end. “If all we are is listless vessels that are just supposed to follow, you know, whatever happens to come down the pike on Truth Social every morning, that’s not going to be a durable movement,” DeSantis said during an interview with Florida Politics.
DeSantis was trying to argue that a movement has to be rooted in principle and not a personality.
The governor also called out factions of the Republican Party who accuse those of not supporting Trump of being Republicans in name only (RINO).
“And so you could be the most conservative person since sliced bread. Unless you’re kissing his rear end, they will somehow call you a RINO. So it’s been totally detached from principle in what you actually believe and results. And it’s more about, you know, just what faction you happen to do,” DeSantis said.
The interview brought strong condemnation from Trump supporters.
“To Hillary Clinton, Trump supporters are ‘deplorables.’ To Ron DeSantis, they are ‘listless vessels.’ The truth is, Trump supporters are patriots. Ron DeSantis is showing his true colors. The pressure of polling in third place is getting to DeSantis and now he is lashing out at the very same voters who got him elected governor. DeSantis must immediately apologize for his disgraceful insult,” said Make America Great Again spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.
I like Gov. DeSantis but his campaign is way off the mark here.
President Reagan’s dream was for the Republicans to be a big tent party. And that means there must be room for America First Conservatives inside the tent.
Obama called us bitter clingers. Hillary called us deplorables and Biden called us dregs of society. Well, I’m proud to call myself a gun-toting, Bible-clinging deplorable. I love America. I love the U.S. Constitution.
And I support President Trump because he delivered on many of his campaign promises during his first term in office.
But when Republicans gather in Milwaukee to select their nominee, I will proudly support that person – whether it’s Trump or DeSantis or someone else.
That being said, someone on DeSantis’ campaign staff might want to let him know that should he become the nominee — he will need the votes of all those so-called “listless vessels.”
