Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker (D-CA), expressed her endorsement for the Democratic party’s endeavors to maintain Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in his position. Pelosi affirmed her support for House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s strategy to retain Johnson as the Speaker of the House. Pelosi’s remarks were made in response to a motion from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to oust her as the House leader. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) have expressed their support for Greene’s proposal. During a meeting with donors on Sunday, the Speaker indicated his willingness to remove members obstructing the legislative agenda of the Democrat-Republican coalition government from committees. He also hinted at potential changes to House rules, including the motion to vacate, towards the end of the congressional term.
Massie has highlighted Johnson’s alleged failures, including the failure to pass 12 separate appropriations bills, the approval of warrantless surveillance on Americans, and the passage of a bill with $95 billion in foreign aid without securing the border as promised. Jeffries has asserted that the Democrats are currently in control, not Johnson and the Republicans, who gained power in the House following the 2022 midterm elections.
“Even though we’re in the minority, we’ve effectively been governing as if we were in the majority because we continue to provide a majority of the votes necessary to get things done,” he told CBS. “Those are just the facts.”
Greene wrote, “The entire Democrat Party is lining up behind Mike Johnson. First, it was the entire leadership team for the Democrats. Now, Nancy Pelosi, who impeached President Trump TWICE, has given Johnson her seal of approval. What deal has been made??”
